What is an ITIL certification?

IT professionals should always be evolving. Advances in technology, driven by a scenario where innovation is constant and new methodologies, best practices, and IT process management arise and are applied at all times. How do you stay up to date? The answer to that may be in another question: Do you know what is an ITIL certification?

It could be an important evolution in your career, keep reading this post for more details.

First, what is ITIL?

Worried about providing their IT professionals with an agile and comprehensive tool with a database of developments in IT management processes and best practices, the British government, through its Computer and Telecommunications Agency, created ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library).

It is a vast library due to its collection of IT management information from the world’s largest companies and is now adopted as an international standard.

So, what is an ITIL certification?

The ITIL certification is a test carried out worldwide by authorized institutions (EXIN and ISEB) and provides three levels of certification:

  • ITIL Foundation
  • ITIL Practitioner
  • ITIL Master

What is an ITIL Foundation certification?

This is a foundation of IT services management; it aims to show that candidates who pass the exam are familiar with the best practices for IT Service Management and principally have a strong command of ITIL terminology. The Foundation Certificate is a prerequisite to applying to other levels of certification.

What is an ITIL Practitioner Certification?

At this level, you will need to attend a specialist course from accredited institutions and complete a test at the end of it. The topics taught are Service and Incident Management and Service Desk.

What is an ITIL Master certification?

You need to have time to do an intensive course over a duration of two weeks, developing your IT management skills in services and processes.

The first certification is open to all and consists of a test of multiple-choice questions. As you saw, the other two certifications require you to be certified first, and also have other ongoing and proven professional experience.

Check below for more details about what an ITIL certification is: how much it costs and how to get it.

Taking the ITIL certification

  • The ordeal is 60 minutes long during which you must answer 40 test type questions. The minimum pass grade is answering 65% of the questions correctly.
  • The exams are conducted at Prometric Certification Centers or online at EXIN’s website.

ITIL Practitioner and ITIL Manager Certifications require you to do preparatory courses at institutions accredited by EXIN or ISEB.

ITIL certification: what is the importance for my career?

A professional with this certification is showing to the industry that they have a strong command of the use of the ITIL platform and how to apply its extensive knowledge base in the management of IT service companies, of all sizes.

The ITIL content is substantial and includes, among other things, a description of processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists that can be applied by an organization to establish integration with its strategy, value delivery, and maintenance at a minimum level of competence. The content is collected from large international corporations, which adds a database of examples and benchmarks from which you can use to greatly speed up your work.

Note that ITIL provides knowledge in the form of books and descriptions of good practice for you to develop improvements and adaptations of the procedures to use in real cases in your day to day work, seeking the best results for your company.
Another very interesting advantage is to display the ITIL logo in your emails and even business cards, showing your clients that you have qualifications obtained and accredited by ITIL.
